a. The session and its benefits to HR practitioners ‐
This goal of this introduction to Political/Organizational Savvy is to adjust attitudes about power and politics, and provide HR professionals with practical political skills to influence with integrity.
1. Define workplace politics
2. Describe the competencies of a politically/organizationally savvy HR professional.
3. Explain the actions to take to take to build a strong reputation and manage others’ perceptions of HR.
4. Use the language of savvy communications to influence others and build key relationships.
The Competencies of a Political/Organizational Savvy Professional:
The Political/Organizational Savvy Model will be presented and explained. Individuals who completed the assessment and brought it with them will have the opportunity to discuss their strengths and development opportunities based on their score.
Know Your “Buzz”
Participants will speculate on their reputations within their organizations by asking themselves the question: “When it comes to a high visibility assignment or promotion, what are people saying about you when you’re not in the room?” Ways to gain answers to that question will be discussed. Participants will complete a brief exercise to apply the concepts discussed to themselves as well as to the HR function.
Participants will learn techniques to reshape negative buzz and create a plan for altering negative perceptions of the individual or HR. Proactive reputation management is a foundational skill for Savvy HR Professionals and forms the basis for building effective relationships. Participants will complete a brief exercise to apply the concepts discussed.
Using Savvy Communications to Influence
Participants will review skills for presenting their ideas and challenging the ideas of powerful leaders or stakeholders without triggering resistance. Techniques to influence others and challenge others will be presented and applied in exercises.
Mary Ann Kmetyk is a Principal and founding partner in Applied Performance Strategies, Inc., a veteran owned, Maryland based consulting firm providing customized technical and employee development training since 1995. Mary Ann provides training and consulting services in the areas of leadership development, performance management, personal skills development, and effective human resource practices. Her clients span a wide range of industries including engineering and technology, education, federal agencies, health care, manufacturing and non-profits.
She is an adjunct faculty member of Howard Community College and a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and the Howard County Human Resources Society.
