Paradox Mindsets:

Building Employee Skills for Addressing Complex Problems

Wendy K. Smith, Ph.D.

        Sponsored by:

As organizations become more complex and dynamic, success increasingly depends on effectively addressing competing demands. Employees need to be able to manage for today, while exploring tomorrow; be creative, while following existing protocol; be a team player, while standing out from the team. While employees once learned to face such dilemmas by making tough choices and maintaining consistent commitment to these decisions, recent research suggests that the most effective individuals embrace competing demands simultaneously. These individuals adopt paradox mindsets; developing a both-and approach to complex dilemmas. In this talk, Wendy will provide insights from her latest research that explores the nature and value of a paradox mindset, and develops ideas about how individuals can build these capabilities.
