Join us for a morning of workshop sessions designed to present an overview of the state of the gender gap (including pay and leadership).  The focus is on building awareness of the issue and presenting initiatives to close the gender gap in our own organizations.


Session I:   The State of the Gap: By the Numbers” with Dr. Fatma Abdel-Raouf, Goldey-Beacom College

The story of gender inequality is told skillfully through the numbers.  An awareness of the issue is built through a presentation of the economic and social impact of inequality.

 

Session II:  Negotiating Your Way to a More Confident You” with Dr. Joel Worden and Dr. Jen Lawless, Goldey-Beacom College

A review of current research and business perspectives on the role of confidence in gender inequality is presented.  This provides the foundation for an interactive session on improving negotiation skills with an examination of body language and verbal communication.

 

 

Session III:  "Closing the Gap with Grit and Grace” with Peggy Eddens, Chief Human Capital Officer and Executive Vice President, WSFS

This session explores what it means to embrace the gap, to have grit and to learn to move forward with grace.

Bio's


Dr. Fatma Abdel-Raouf
is a professor of economics and finance at Goldey-Beacom College. With over twenty years of teaching experience at the graduate and undergraduate levels, she has taught at Cleveland State University, Myers University, University of Phoenix, Langston University, State University of New York at Albany, and Cairo University. She has publications in the Eastern Economic Journal, the Southwestern Economic Review, the International Advances in Economic Research, the International Journal of the Economic of Business, and the Journal of Business and Economic Studies. Further, Fatma co-authored Microeconomics Study Guide for Hubbard and O’Brien Economics Book and the Idiot’s Guide to Statistics. Fatma is a member of the editorial board of the Scientific Journals International, and a referee for the Eastern Economic Journal and the Southwestern Economic Review. She has been awarded the Excellence in Teaching awards from Goldey-Beacom College and Langston University, and she is the Treasurer and an Executive Board Member of Delaware American Council on Education Women’s Network.  

Dr. Joel Worden earned his PhD from the University of Delaware in 2005 and has since then taught written and oral communication courses at Goldey-Beacom College.  Co-author of the recent book, Up, Down, and Sideways: High-Impact Verbal Communication for HR Professionals, Joel has also written study guides and book chapters, and he enjoys consulting for local organizations, helping them craft more effective written and oral communications.  His research interests include the variety of nonverbal communications available to speakers, as well as how speakers persuade.  In his personal time, Joel enjoys raising his three daughters and one son with his wife, gardening in the summer, and surfing whenever he gets the chance.

Dr. Jennifer (Jen) Buhler Lawless is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology department at Goldey-Beacom College and a licensed clinical psychologist. She is also the faculty advisor for the Psychology Club.  Her teaching philosophy focuses on building strong critical thinking skills by challenging students to bring current events and topics from the Psychology field into the classroom.   In addition to teaching, Dr. Lawless works part-time conducting behavioral health rehabilitative service (BHRS) evaluations in Sharon Hill and the Lehigh Valley for Northwestern Human Services.  She works primarily with children and adolescents in this setting.  She has a history of working in inpatient psychiatric settings in both acute and long-term units as well as a community mental health outpatient program providing psychological assessment, individual therapy, and group therapy.  

Ms. Peggy H. Eddens has been Chief Human Capital Officer and Executive Vice President of Wilmington Savings Fund Society, FSB since 2012 and 2007 respectively. Ms. Eddens serves as the Chief Human Capital Officer and Executive Vice President of WSFS Financial Corp. and its subsidiary WSFS Bank.He served as an Executive Vice President of Human Capital Management Department and Chief Human Capital Officer for WSFS Bank since August 27, 2007. Ms. Eddens oversees all aspects of human capital management, training and leadership development for WSFS Financial Corp. She served as Director of Human Capital Management of Wilmington Savings Fund Society FSB at WSFS Financial Corp. She served as Director of Human Capital Management of WSFS Financial Corp. since August 27, 2007. Ms. Eddens began her financial services career in Pittsburgh at Mellon Bank where she held a variety of training and human resources management positions, culminating in her role as First Vice President and Regional Human Resources Director at Citizens Bank after the merger. She also served as Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Development at Nextier Bank in Butler, PA from 2003 to 2007. She serves as a Director of Delaware Humane Association. She is a member of the University of Delaware Employer Advisory group. She was Program Director for the University of Delaware School of Continuing Studies for the Strategic Human Capital Certificate program. She volunteers as a guest presenter for various local colleges and has been a key note speaker for affiliated organizations, across the country. Ms. Eddens holds an MS degree in Human Resources Management from LaRoche College and a BS Degree from Robert Morris University.
