The College Relations/Workforce Readiness Committee of Delaware SHRM was busy last year connecting with college students who are studying Human Resources.
The Committee hosted Human Resource Panel events at 7 local colleges in Q4 of 2018 called “Pathways to a Career in Human Resource Management.”
At each college, students were inspired by three to four accomplished HR professionals who shared their career journey in the field of HR. The goal of the events is to inform students about the variety of options that are available in the field of HR such as Recruiting, Employee Relations, Benefits, Compensation, Technology, Diversity & Inclusion just to name a few. The HR events began with an interactive exercise to help students learn more about the art of networking and connecting with others. Then the HR Professionals shared their career journeys and the students got to ask pointed questions to learn more.
Over 250 students were educated on the various careers paths in the field of HR. Through these events, University of Delaware and Delaware State University have started SHRM Student Chapters!
In addition to these events, the Committee helps prepare the future workforce by offering scholarships to promising students. At the 18th Annual Delaware State Human Resources Conference, the Committee had the privilege of awarding $2,500 scholarships to three deserving students attending Delaware colleges. To be considered, each student had to meet specific requirements as well as submit a 3-minute video solving a human resource challenge. The following students won the 2018-2019 scholarship awards:
- Toni Leonardi – University of Delaware
- Ashley Clark – Goldie Beacom
- Tonya Adkins – Wilmington University
Delaware SHRM and the College Relations/Workforce Readiness Committee are thrilled to provide these opportunities to develop and equip future professionals in the field of HR.
