Monthly Member Spotlight: An Interview with Regina Nelson of PeopleShare
Regina Nelson is a Human Resources professional with 20+ years’ experience in business development and relationship management. Regina has worked in a variety of meaningful roles during her career, including working at a top technology company assisting companies in streamlining the workflow of their processes. She also spent over 16 years in the fashion industry driving the strategic sales of the Mid-Atlantic territory.
Her extensive experience building authentic relationships with clients and customers has been her greatest joy and accomplishment. We recently caught up with Regina and learned a little more about what she’s passionate about. Read the interview below!
What’s the best piece of advice you received along the way as you were building your career in HR?
The best advice I have ever received is to never stop learning your trade. Always stay up to date on current issues and HR topics because the industry is always evolving and improving. You impact so many people in your work that it beneficial to have the best knowledge at your disposal.
If you could live (and work) anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I have lived & worked in Ireland, Italy & England. I have also traveled to far corners of the world with the highlights being Hong Kong & Thailand. Traveling has broadened my development by helping me discover wonderful, varied cultures. This has given me the ability to adapt and empathize with all cultures. I believe my travels have definitely impacted my career by giving me new perspectives to “think outside the box” and connect personally with clients and customers. As an HR professional, we experience this diversity firsthand and I find that exciting and rewarding.
Outside of your work in HR, what wakes you up in the morning?
I strive to have a purpose every day: whether it is as simple as running errands or as complex as taking on a full day’s work. The mindset of setting out to do something and accomplishing it is thrilling.
I know that my attitude and passion is a daily opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life. My amazing family continues to teach me the importance of Integrity, empathy and resilience.
What is a current issue you are passionate about?
I am passionate about mentoring and guiding the next generation of professionals as they start their career, especially young women. A great mentor can shape your entire career: they teach you how to communicate effectively, envision who you want to become, and grow in your role and personal life. As a seasoned HR professional, I strive to be that person for those that work for and with me.
What advice would you give to a new college graduate?
The advice I would give to a new graduate is that there are no shortcuts to success, only hard work will get you there. Always strive to be a “thought leader” in your company; come prepared and with fresh ideas and insight to every interaction and meeting. Don’t forget the human aspect of the job - get to know those that you hire; that is what will keep them at your company - genuine interest in them as a person!
